The Iconic Puzzle Game Couldn't Succeed at The Game Awards — Another Award Type Might Solve This

Whenever a prominent honors show approaches, you'll find a clamor to include of new categories to acknowledge underappreciated efforts and delight the hearts of followers with niche passions.

Another commentator made the case advocating for terror-themed awards. That would be fantastic. The same goes for strategy board titles, this being a passionate advocate's mission. However, I must insist if I try to elbow in front because like all single-minded supporters, I possess a compelling case supporting my request stands as crucial and significant. The demand is this: There should be a category for puzzle games.

The Genre Classification Challenge

Categorizing art by genre isn't exact; opinions vary greatly, and it will always generate discussions and end in fuzzy definitions. It's understandable that movie academies steer clear of genre categories. Yet it remains an essential concession for the industry of gaming, showing incredible range it's challenging to consider them one unified medium.

For comprehensive acknowledgment of achievement in video games to receive acknowledgment, and for games of all stripes to receive proper recognition, genre categories are essential.

Present Award Structure

Leading game ceremonies offer these genre categories for Action, Adventure-action titles, Role-Playing, Combat games, Sim/Strategy, plus athletic and racing experiences. Together, these classifications effectively encompass many game types, making space possible for most games within them.

Different situation exists for puzzle games. There’s simply nowhere to put them. Think about these outstanding current releases, showing diverse approaches: the architectural riddles in a particular game, the pulse-pounding block-matching of another game, engaging interpersonal challenges from additional release. What category would fit them among existing types? Unfortunately, nowhere.

The Representation Problem

There are dozens excellent brain-teasers published annually that have no home at major award shows, unless they happen to qualify award groups including Handheld titles, VR/AR Game, or the extremely competitive Indie races.

  • An iconic brain-teaser wasn’t nominated in any category during that awards season
  • Another imaginative release missed out in 2019
  • Popular arranging title got ignored in 2021
  • Limited numbers of puzzle games barely qualified for niche award types

Importance of Logic Titles

Commonly they're small games, yet the craft of the puzzle game carries substantial weight. Iconic mobile puzzle games stand as the most-played games globally maintaining this status for an extended period.

The legendary block-stacking game challenges famous sandbox experiences for the title of highest-selling title ever; it’s also in the running for top gaming experience. Brain-teasers form essential building blocks within interactive entertainment, while interacting with diverse game types.

Proposal and Rationale

Brain-teasers wouldn't encounter such difficulty. It would be easy to populate multiple candidates engaging, different, qualified experiences annually without trouble — actually, with challenge, because you’d have to leave so many good games out.

Restating the point, these include experiences that otherwise have no home in important events. Puzzle game makers function at the hard edge game development, producing among the purest expressions of gaming itself. Just like movie stunt professionals, they deserve recognition. Don't make them wait decades.
