The Former President's Woke Warning Overlooks The Continent's Real Threat: Technological Stagnation.

Donald Trump's national security strategy offers a misguided view of the European Union. The document asserts that unrestrained immigration and what it terms "progressive" agendas represent an grave risk to the continent's identity. Yet, this argument is based on a fundamental misreading of the situation. The true challenge confronting Europe is not cultural but economic and technological lag.

A Glaring Economic Divide Separating Europe and the US

The data reveal a sobering picture. From 2008 and 2023, American economic output surged by eighty-seven percent, compared to a paltry 13.5% increase for the European Union. Over this time, EU GDP per capita fell from over three-quarters to just 50% of the US level. Strikingly, even the poorest US state now boasts a higher per capita income than major EU nations like Italy and France.

Currently, roughly half of the world’s top fifty tech companies are US-based, while only four are European.

The Innovation Shortfall: A Critical Problem

The growing economic gap stems from superior productivity growth in the US, fueled by technological innovation and better use of resources. The scene of world technology dominance is decidedly US-centric. In the last fifty years, 241 US firms have scaled into companies valued at over ten billion dollars, compared with only fourteen in the European continent.

This gap prompts a vital question: In the race for future industries like semiconductors, AI, and fusion energy, what is Europe positioned? Most analysts concede it is essentially a two-horse race between the US and China, with European nations starting at a clear handicap.

Root Causes of Europe's Technological Lag

Several key reasons explain this innovation chasm.

  • Financing Ecosystem: The US boasts a far deeper and more dynamic system for financing new ventures. The EU still lacks a true unified investment market, which caps the growth potential of emerging companies.
  • Regulatory Fragmentation: Excessive and fragmented rules hinder European business. A American entrepreneur can introduce a product under a single regulatory framework to access a market of hundreds of millions. The EU, despite a larger population, is divided among twenty-seven separate systems, creating significant internal barriers.
  • Mindset Differences: Views on risk-taking vary greatly. In some EU nations, business failure was once met with stigma, whereas in the US, it is often seen as a valuable lesson.
  • Defense Spending: The US benefits from a deeply integrated academic-military-industrial complex. The continent's long-term lack of spending in defense has eroded its ability in pioneering research.

The Road Ahead: Grounds for Cautious Optimism

In spite of these hurdles, one can find causes for hope. European leaders are increasingly aware of the existential challenge and have started to advance serious reform. Key analyses on EU competitiveness and the internal market point to the necessity of sweeping reforms.

Given appropriate policies and regulatory reforms, Europe's strengths could support much higher levels of business-led breakthroughs.

Europe retains significant strengths: high-quality human capital, excellent education systems, and world-class labs. Alongside a large internal market and high savings rates, these foundations have the potential to trigger a new wave of venture creation.

Crucially, even if the EU does not become the leader in developing next-generation technologies, it can still significantly increase productivity by adopting and adapting innovations from elsewhere.

A Critical Juncture

The European Union now faces a decisive crossroads. As the saying goes, economic erosion often happens "slowly, then all at once". So far, the continent's slide in innovation has been gradual. However, without bold steps to tackle its structural weaknesses, today's gradual weakening could give way to a rapid and permanent loss of world influence.
