Nepal's Electoral Landscape Sees Major Alliance Forged Between TV Host and Former Musician Mayor

In a notable development ahead of the upcoming general election, two prominent personalities in Nepali politics have joined forces. This alliance comes in the aftermath of large-scale and deadly young people's demonstrations that shook the country earlier this year and eventually led to the removal of the incumbent government.

A Commitment to Tackle Youth Concerns

Television host Rabi Lamichhane, who leads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a one-time rapper, have publicly pledged to prioritize the grievances raised by the new generation. This commitment comes after the violent anti-graft unrest that occurred in September, which resulted in considerable loss of life.

"Consensus should not be what a leader wants, it should be what the country needs," remarked Lamichhane after the agreement was signed.

The September revolt was triggered by widespread frustration over a temporary government ban on social media platforms. This incident acted as a spark for underlying resentment stemming from a long period of slow growth and longstanding allegations of systemic graft in politics.

Details of the New Electoral Agreement

According to the official agreement, the roles for the approaching election have been clarified. Rabi Lamichhane will continue to serve as the leader of the RSP. In turn, Balendra Shah will be the alliance's nominee for the position of prime minister in the election set for 5 March.

  • Rabi Lamichhane: A well-known fifty-one-year-old television personality, he founded the RSP in 2022, channeling broad public dissatisfaction with the country's older political leadership. He has previously held the positions of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was recently freed on bail in a case related to reported cooperative fraud and organized crime.
  • Balendra Shah (Balen): The 35-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is seen as a central player in Nepal's current political shift. He was instrumental in setting up the interim government that took over after the previous administration was removed.

Broader Government Consultations Underway

In a related development, the current interim prime minister over the weekend held consultations with several major political figures. These discussions included ex- prime ministers and the heads of rival major parties, marking the first such dialogue since the period of the protests.

After these discussions, the prime minister posted on social media to state that conducting a free and fair election is a shared duty. The statement reiterated the government's commitment to ensuring a safe and fear-free environment for the polls, noting that efforts are being made to eliminate any uncertainty.
