EU Might Retaliate to ‘Unjustified’ US Travel Restrictions, Spokesperson Says

The EU could “act quickly and firmly” against what it deems “unjustified” visa bans imposed by the United States on five European individuals working on combating digital hatred and misinformation, a European Commission spokesperson has said.

European Leaders Decry US Move as ‘Intimidation’

European leaders such as the French president accused Washington of “bullying and threats”, after the visa restrictions were placed on figures who have been central to campaigns to introduce legislation governing US-based technology firms.

“For far too long, ideologues in Europe have spearheaded organised efforts to coerce American platforms to punish American viewpoints they oppose,” wrote a senior US official in a social media post. “This government will no longer tolerate such actions of extraterritorial censorship.”

Widespread Condemnation From EU Nations

Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives joined the French president in condemning the move.

The restrictions were enacted on Tuesday against an ex-European commissioner who helped draft the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as several anti-disinformation campaigners, from two in Germany and two in the UK.

An Escalating Conflict Over Regulation

The DSA is viewed by US officials as a form of censorship, whereas European leaders contend the regulations are essential to control inflammatory language and falsehoods.

This row risks becoming part of a much broader ongoing political and ideological clash involving Washington and European institutions.

  • Authorization was issued for the deployment of hundreds of national guard troops to a major US city prior to the new year, coinciding with an ongoing immigration enforcement operation.
  • The nation of Palau will consent to accept dozens of migrants from the US in return for additional aid, following concluding a formal agreement with Washington.

Additionally, a congressional representative has initiated legal action to demand the removal of the current president’s name from a prominent performing arts center in Washington DC.

Analysts point out that comments regarding foreign petroleum resources reflect a wider ideology in some quarters of “economic expansionism”, leading to parallels with past foreign policy actions.
