American and British Alert of Substantial Digital Visa Data Breach in Federal Republic of Somalia

At least 35,000 individuals might be compromised, warns the American embassy

A major information leak in the Somali electronic visa system potentially disclosed sensitive details belonging to numerous thousands of individuals, involving United States passport holders, the United States diplomatic mission in Somalia has warned.

Officials stated obtained credible reports that "unknown cyber attackers" breached the Mogadishu administration's digital visa application portal, likely endangering information belonging to approximately 35,000 individuals.

The exposed records distributed through digital channels include full names, photographs, date of birth information, relationship status, place of residence and electronic mail addresses, as stated in a American diplomatic communication released on last Thursday.

"This security incident is ongoing and potentially disclose all private information provided to the application portal," the UK has similarly alerted travelers.

"Consider the risks before applying for a digital visa required for entry into the Somali nation."

Official Reaction

Government officials have remained silent on the breach. However the government has moved visa application system away from evisa.gov.so to the updated platform, without issuing a formal statement.

"Although the US Embassy in Mogadishu lacks the capacity to validate if personal information is part of the compromise, travelers who have requested visas through the electronic visa system might be compromised," the official communication stated.

Geopolitical Impact

The updated visa process mandates each person traveling, including those from the independently governed area of the northern territory and the partially independent area of Puntland, to apply for entry visas through digital means.

Critics say visitors have encountered supplementary costs in specific areas, amounting to repeated fees.

Regional Dynamics

Somaliland, that proclaimed statehood in the early nineties, administers its affairs via separate governmental bodies but has not been global recognition. Somalia asserts that this territory continues to belong to its national domain.

The claimed security incident adds to long-running tensions concerning central government and northern authorities regarding authority over national air territory. While Somalia re-established full control of national aviation space in 2017, northern authorities regularly disputes this agreement.

Ongoing Conflict

The dispute worsened this week after Hargeisa's chief executive the regional leader stated the northern territory would not accept Mogadishu's electronic visa and ordered that aviation companies need to acquire authorization from Somaliland officials when approaching the region's aviation space.

Yet major airlines have declined to board passengers without federal visa authorization.

Recently, the northern region's top diplomat the diplomatic representative reiterated that "anyone travelling to the breakaway region will obtain travel authorization at the point of entry", saying the federal electronic visa platform lacked security and warning that "people's data might be obtained by the hands of extremist groups" due to utilizing the system.

Aviation Challenges

The stand-off has resulted in certain visitors destined for the northern region stuck in transit hubs after being denied boarding due to absence of Somalia's e-visa.

Hargeisa's air transport representative, the transport official, has told media outlets that the instructions - first announced previously - came into effect on 10 November.

He said airlines that do not comply might be directed to divert, and asserted several aircraft were previously redirected.

Jurisdictional Battle

Video evidence published by the northern region's air transport department appears to show regional aviation officials providing guidance to global airline crews - an action applauded locally as a confirmation of northern self-governance.

Nevertheless the federal aviation regulator maintains it possesses exclusive regulatory authority over the Mogadishu Flight Information Region (Flight Information Region), that includes all territorial skies. Officials have directed every plane to pay no attention to all directives issued by authorities other than federal authorities.

It warned that not adhering to federal and global flight regulations could generate aviation dangers and lead to "significant legal repercussions".
